The photographer behind the camera

Black and white photograph of Michael Wilkins in a winter jacket and cap, sitting on a rock on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, with the snow-covered Remarkables range under low cloud behind him.
Lake Wakatipu, winter 2018. The Remarkables doing what they are named for.

I'm Michael Wilkins. By day I run digital marketing; the camera is the thing I do because I can't help it. Photography has never been my job — which is exactly why it has stayed good. No client briefs, no shot lists, no second-guessing. If a photograph is on this site, it's here because I wanted to make it.

I shoot a Canon EOS-1D X Mark II — a heavy, weather-sealed brute of a camera that has been rained on in the Eastern Cape, frozen in Iceland and hauled up Sydney headlands before dawn. The work spans wildlife, cityscapes, landscapes, aerial, dogs, action sports, astro — with a fine-art lean: low-key animals emerging from black, high-key minimals, long exposures that trade seconds for stillness.

I'm based in London at the moment, with New Zealand pulling at me from the other side of the world. Every photograph here is my own work, and most of them are available as fine-art prints or for licensing. While I'm in London I also take on a small number of commissions in the UK and Europe.
