The Colosseum's curved arcades and the edge of the Arch of Constantine seen in soft light across wet cobbles, two umbrella pines and an ornate lamp post standing over an empty street, the whole scene doubled in a broad rain puddle in the foreground.

The Colosseum, in a Puddle

Rome, Italy · December 2019

1D X Mark II, 24 millimetres, f 8, 1/125 of a second, ISO 500

Rome, twice.

The same puddle as the arch, turned the other way, less than a minute later. The Colosseum sits low in the frame so the reflection can have the bottom half, and the two pines do the composing; without them it is a car park with a ruin at the end of it. The one person in the frame is small enough to miss, which is rarer here than the photograph makes it look.

Part of Rome, a series.
