Photograph looking straight up inside the domed vestibule of Diocletian's Palace, the circular open oculus at the top showing blue sky, ancient brickwork curving away below it.

Oculus

The dome lost its roof centuries ago. It improved it.

The vestibule of Diocletian's Palace, shot straight up. The dome has been open to the sky for centuries — whatever closed it is long gone — and what is left is a perfect circle of blue set in bare Roman brick, with the courses spiralling away underneath. People sing in here because the acoustic is extraordinary; I waited for a gap and pointed the camera at the ceiling.
