A Samoyed running straight towards the camera through deep snow, its white coat almost the same tone as the snow and sky, mouth open, one front paw lifted mid-stride and a blur of snow flying at its feet.

Coming Through the Snow

January 2024

1D X Mark II, 102 millimetres, f 2.8, 1/2000 of a second, ISO 100

White on white, and still the most solid thing in the frame.

A white dog in white snow under a white sky is a lighting problem before it is a portrait. Exposed to keep detail in the coat, so the background drops to a pale nothing and the only dark things left are the eyes, the nose and the open mouth. Head-on, low, and fast enough that the front paw is still off the ground.
