Steep volcanic cliffs covered in vivid green vegetation, cut into deep vertical flutes and ridges by erosion, raking light picking out every fold.

The Fluting

August 2018

Sony A9, 71 millimetres, f 11, 1/1250 of a second, ISO 8000

Rain carved these — thousands of years of it running down the same lines until the whole face is corrugated. The light has to be side-on or the ridges flatten out and you are left photographing a green wall.
