Photograph of Kirkjufell in winter, its distinctive steep cone rising above a snow-covered plain, with a frozen waterfall and blue ice on dark rock in the foreground.

The Church Mountain

Snæfellsnes, Iceland · February 2018

1D X Mark II, 24 millimetres, f 5.6, 1/4000 of a second, ISO 2500

The most photographed mountain in Iceland. It earns it.

Kirkjufell — the church mountain — from the standard spot, because the standard spot is the standard spot for a reason: the falls in the foreground and the cone behind line up almost too neatly. I shot it in winter partly for the ice and partly because most of the year there is a queue of tripods here. The blue in the frozen falls is the only colour in the frame doing any real work.

Part of Iceland in Winter, a series.
