High-key minimal photograph of a single lifeguard tower on an empty beach, the sand running as a warm band across the frame beneath a completely blown-out white sky.

Tower 26

Santa Monica, California · August 2019

1D X Mark II, 105 millimetres, f 4, 1/125 of a second, ISO 100

One object, one horizon, and nothing else allowed in.

Shot into a hazy overcast and pushed until the sky went completely white, leaving a warm band of sand, a hard horizon and one tower. Santa Monica has a couple of dozen of these and they are identical, numbered, and evenly spaced — which makes them useful when what you want is a single object and no context at all.
