An elephant seen close from behind, wrinkled hide and ear filling the left of the frame, one curved tusk showing against desaturated thornbush.

You read an elephant in parts.

Up close, an elephant stops being an outline and becomes geology — hide creased like dry riverbeds, the ear a worn map. He was turning away from us, unbothered, and rather than wait for a conventional portrait I photographed the parts: skin, ear, and the single bright curve of tusk. The colour is pulled right down; the texture never needed it.
