High-key black and white photograph of a grey Icelandic horse in snow, shown from the shoulder up in three-quarter profile with its long pale mane blown forward across its face by the wind.

Windward

Iceland · February 2018

1D X Mark II, 50 millimetres, f 4, 1/500 of a second, ISO 2500

The mane does what the wind tells it. There is a lot of wind.

Shot into a flat white field in falling light, so the horse had almost nothing behind it and the frame could be printed high-key with the coat running into the background. What makes it is the mane: Icelandic horses grow an absurd amount of it, and in a crosswind the whole lot goes forward over the face at once. I waited for the gust rather than the pose.

Part of Iceland in Winter, a series.
