The Ledger

Pumba Game Reserve, South Africa · December 2022

1D X Mark II, 371 millimetres, f 5.6, 1/250 of a second, ISO 200

Every mark on that face was put there by another lion.

He was lying in grass at eye level with the vehicle and looked up for about two seconds. What I wanted was the face rather than the pose — the nicks across the muzzle, the split on the bridge of the nose, the notch out of one ear. A male lion's face is a ledger of every fight he has had, and none of it was with anything other than another lion.

Part of Pumba, a series.
