The Empire State Building lit gold at night, framed beneath a traffic-light gantry and beside a corner of billboards and shopfronts, a blurred yellow cab streaking across the crossing and pedestrians gathered on the far kerb.

Everybody else was moving.

Thirty-fourth Street, with an exposure long enough that the cab dissolves into a yellow smear and the people on the corner blur into a crowd. The tower is the fixed point; everything at street level is on its way somewhere. The gantry across the top is not elegant, but it is what standing at the crossing looks like, and I would rather have that than a tidier lie.
