Long-exposure seawater turned to mist swirls around sandstone boulders below a dark sea wall, a rusted metal post standing upright in the flow.

The Soft Sea

Bronte, Sydney · February 2017

EOS 6D, 60 millimetres, f 22, 20 seconds, ISO 100

Minutes of ocean in one frame.

A few minutes of shutter and the ocean stops being water — it pools around the boulders like fog with weight. The rusted post is the anchor; everything else in the frame is either stone or time. Bronte's south end does this on the right swell at the right hour, and it never does it exactly the same way twice.
