Pink and terracotta houses stacked in tiers up a steep green cliff above a deep blue sea, with boats moored offshore and the coastline running away into haze.

Stacked Above the Water

Positano, Amalfi Coast · July 2017

1D X Mark II, 24 millimetres, f 7.1, 1/640 of a second, ISO 100

Built on the only flat bits, and then on the rest.

What gets me about this coast is that nobody waited for flat ground. The houses are stacked in tiers up something that is really a cliff with ambitions, painted in colours that have no business working together and do. The sea is there to hold the bottom of the frame down.
