Minimal photograph of a thin crescent moon in a deep blue twilight sky above the black silhouette of a jagged mountain ridge, no other detail in the frame.

Crescent

Verbier, Switzerland · January 2020

1D X Mark II, 70 millimetres, f 2.8, 1/30 of a second, ISO 500

Almost nothing in it. That was the point.

Two elements: a ridge gone completely to silhouette, and a three-day moon in a sky still holding the last of the blue. I exposed for the moon and let the mountain go black, which is the only way to keep the crescent as a shape rather than a white blob. It is the emptiest frame I brought back from Switzerland and probably my favourite.
