Photograph of dark silhouetted mountain ridges at dusk beneath a horizontal band of deep pink and red cloud, a thin strip of pale turquoise sky visible at the horizon.

The Last Band

Verbier, Switzerland · January 2020

1D X Mark II, 155 millimetres, f 2.8, 1/30 of a second, ISO 100

Red on top, turquoise underneath, black everywhere else.

The last few minutes of usable light, when the sun is already below the ridge and only the underside of the cloud is still catching it. What makes this one is the narrow turquoise strip along the horizon under all that red — the two ends of the spectrum stacked directly on top of each other, with the mountains between them as pure black. No graduated filter, just the right ten minutes.
