Sunrise photograph over a beach, tufts of dune grass silhouetted in the foreground, wet sand catching gold light and a rocky headland reaching into the sea beyond.

First Light, Dune

Sydney, Australia · June 2019

1D X Mark II, 100 millimetres, f 11, 1/1000 of a second, ISO 1250

Low, through the grass, before anyone else was on it.

Down in the dune grass at first light, shooting through the tufts with the sun just clearing the headland. Getting the camera this low puts the grass in silhouette across the bottom third and leaves the wet sand to carry the colour. Twenty minutes later this beach had runners, dogs and a surf class on it.
