Moody photograph of steps and steel handrails leading down into a seaside ocean pool at dusk, the still pool water pale against a dark stormy sky and rough sea beyond.

Handrails

Sydney, Australia · June 2019

Australia builds swimming pools into the rocks. It is a very good idea.

An ocean pool — a swimming pool cut into the rock shelf and refilled by the surf at high tide. There are dozens along this coast and they are all free. Shot from the top of the steps with the handrails running diagonally into the frame, at dusk with a storm sitting offshore. The pool water is dead flat; two metres beyond the wall it is not.

Part of The Sydney Coast, a series.
