High-key black and white photograph of a snow-covered ridge line, the mountain's dark rock ribs showing faintly through deep snow against an almost featureless pale grey sky.

Low Contrast

Iceland · February 2018

1D X Mark II, 105 millimetres, f 4, 1/4000 of a second, ISO 2000

Flat light, no horizon, and the mountain only just there.

Flat overcast, which most people would call bad light and which for this kind of subject is the best light there is. There is no shadow, no sky to speak of, and almost no separation between the mountain and the air behind it — just the dark ribs of rock showing through the snow, drawing the ridge line. Printed high-key so it stays almost white, and the form has to be looked for rather than handed over.

Part of Iceland in Winter, a series.
