Black and white photograph of a straight snow-covered road running between two rows of bare frost-covered trees, tyre tracks in the snow leading to a bright vanishing point.

The Avenue

Iceland · January 2018

1D X Mark II, 80 millimetres, f 11, 1/60 of a second, ISO 100

One-point perspective, handed to you for free.

Every tree along this road was carrying a full load of frost and the whole scene had already decided to be black and white before I got there. The tracks pull you straight down the middle to a vanishing point that has gone completely white — no horizon, no sky, nothing to land on. I left it that way. The picture is about the corridor, not about where it goes.

Part of Iceland in Winter, a series.
