Panoramic photograph of Lake Pukaki at dusk under a violet and pink sky, snow-covered ranges with Aoraki Mount Cook catching the last alpenglow, the lakeside highway curving through willows and tussock in the foreground.

Pukaki, Last Light

Lake Pukaki, New Zealand · September 2020

1D X Mark II, 70 millimetres, f 8, 1/125 of a second, ISO 800

The sky did this for about four minutes. The tripod was already up.

Dusk on the second evening, looking up the lake toward Aoraki as the alpenglow let go of the summits. The whole scene went violet — sky, water, snow, all of it — with one band of pink holding above the range. The highway curves through the willows below and then it is just lake all the way to the mountains. Stitched as a panorama on the 70–200. September, late winter, and cold enough that waiting those last minutes out was a decision.

Part of The Southern Alps, a series.
