A stacked stone cairn balances on a boulder above Lake Tekapo, turquoise water and mountain ranges stretching behind under streaked cirrus cloud.

Cairn Above Tekapo

Lake Tekapo, New Zealand · March 2018

1D X Mark II, 24 millimetres, f 22, 1/60 of a second, ISO 100

Someone stacked it. Everyone photographs it.

From the hill above Tekapo the water goes an implausible turquoise — glacial flour, not a filter — and the ranges queue up behind it to the horizon. Someone had stacked a cairn on the boulder in the foreground. I gave it the frame it was clearly built for: stone hands in front, ice-fed blue behind, cirrus streaking the whole sky sideways.
