Black-and-white frame of a lone skier carving a single turn across a vast, otherwise untouched snow face, a curl of spray trailing behind, dark rock outcrops breaking the slope above and a hard shadow line cutting across the lower half of the frame.

One Turn

New Zealand · August 2019

Sony A9, 70 millimetres, f 5, 1/1600 of a second, ISO 100

A lot of mountain for one turn.

The skier is almost incidental. The frame is about the scale of the face and the single line drawn across it, with the shadow of a ridge cutting the slope in two. Monochrome suits it: hard sun on the upper face, everything below the shadow line going grey, and the rocks the only thing in the picture that is truly black.
