High-key view along a wide beach from above, small figures scattered across pale sand and in the shallows, a long curve of white surf, houses stacked up the slope behind and a hazy ridge of hills in the distance under a washed-out sky.

The Whole Beach, From the Pier

September 2019

1D X Mark II, 70 millimetres, f 2.8, 1/500 of a second, ISO 100

Everybody, from a distance.

Exposed for the sand, so the sky goes to almost nothing and the beach becomes a pale field with people dotted across it. From up on the pier they stop being individuals and become a pattern, which is the point: how many of them there are, and how much beach. The haze helps; the hills behind soften to a single blue shape.
