Long-exposure photograph of a lone willow growing out of the water of Lake Wanaka, its bare-topped crown leaning right, smooth grey water and cloud-covered mountains behind.

That Wanaka Tree

Lake Wanaka, New Zealand · March 2018

1D X Mark II, 60 millimetres, f 22, 20 seconds, ISO 100

It has its own hashtag. It is also, annoyingly, a very good tree.

A willow that started life as a fence post, took root in the lake bed and is now the most photographed tree in the country. I resented it slightly on the way down and then stood there for forty minutes. A long exposure flattens the water completely, which is the only way to isolate it — in a chop it just looks like a shrub in a puddle. Cloud came down over the range at exactly the right moment and took the background out.
