Photograph of a large wave breaking and throwing spray over a dark rock shelf at golden hour, the lip curling forward with warm light behind it and blurred rock in the foreground.

The Shelf

Sydney, Australia · May 2019

1D X Mark II, 135 millimetres, f 11, 1/2000 of a second, ISO 1600

Shot from the rocks, which in hindsight was a decision.

Taken lying on a rock shelf with a wave coming over the top of it, which is how you get the lip at eye level and also how you get a wet camera. Backlit by low sun so the water going over the crest lights up and the rock stays dark. The blurred foreground is the shelf itself, about a metre from the lens and about to be underwater.
