An Icelandic horse's head emerges from black shadow, chestnut strands of mane catching a thin band of light, eyes soft.

Horse in the Dark

Iceland · January 2018

1D X Mark II, 70 millimetres, f 4, 1/250 of a second, ISO 100

Winter light, used sparingly.

Icelandic winter offers a few hours of low, sideways light and this horse stood exactly where one thin band of it fell. Exposing for that band dropped the rest of the animal into black — a nose, a soft-closed eye, loose strands of chestnut mane, and nothing else. The dark is doing most of the work. It usually is.

Part of Iceland in Winter, a series.
