A white lion lies on dark ground beneath trees at dusk, front legs stretched forward, pale blue eyes catching the last light.

Blue Eyes at Dusk

Pumba Game Reserve, Eastern Cape, South Africa · December 2022

1D X Mark II, 135 millimetres, f 5, 1/1000 of a second, ISO 400

The last light went to the right place.

End of the day, light almost gone, and he settled under the trees the way lions do when the work of doing nothing is finished. Everything in the frame slides toward black — the bush, the trunk behind him, the ground — except the pale coat and those blue eyes, which held the dusk longer than anything else in the landscape.

Part of Pumba, a series.
