Night photograph of the Acropolis of Athens floodlit on its rock, the Parthenon and Erechtheion glowing pale gold, with everything around and below fallen to pure black.

Lit Rock

Athens, Greece · August 2021

1D X Mark II, 142 millimetres, f 22, 20 seconds, ISO 400

Two and a half thousand years, floating on nothing.

Exposed for the floodlights and let the rest go, which leaves the Parthenon and the Erechtheion sitting on their rock with no city underneath and no sky above — just a lit object in black. Athens is a sprawling, noisy, entirely modern place and from most angles the Acropolis is surrounded by it. At night that all disappears.

Part of Night Cities, a series.
