Soft-focus black and white photograph taken through the Brooklyn Bridge's suspension cables, a thick main cable sweeping through the foreground with the stone tower and a blur of walkers beyond.

Suspension

Brooklyn Bridge, New York · February 2020

1D X Mark II, 24 millimetres, f 4, 1/250 of a second, ISO 100

Focus on the cable and let the rest of the bridge go.

Focused on the main cable a foot from the lens and let everything past it — the tower, the walkway, the people — fall away. The Brooklyn Bridge is usually photographed as a whole object, which makes it a picture of a landmark; up close it is a mesh of steel rope going in four directions at once, which is more interesting. Black and white, because in colour the whole thing is beige.
