Dawn photograph looking straight down the empty Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian walkway, its centre line running to the lit stone tower ahead, lamps still on against a blue morning sky.

Empty Promenade

Brooklyn Bridge, New York · January 2021

1D X Mark II, 16 millimetres, f 11, 1/125 of a second, ISO 100

The only hour this walkway is ever empty.

There is one window, roughly between first light and seven in the morning, when you can stand in the middle of this walkway and have it entirely to yourself. Dead-centre and symmetrical, lamps still burning, the boards running straight at the tower. An hour later there are four hundred people on it and this photograph does not exist.
