Night photograph of the Radio City Music Hall facade, its vertical red neon signs and illuminated marquee glowing against the dark building, a yellow cab passing below.

Radio City

New York · February 2021

Two vertical signs, one marquee, and a cab exactly where it should be.

Radio City at night, shot from across Sixth Avenue so both vertical signs stack up the frame and the marquee runs along the bottom. It has been lit like this since 1932 and the neon is still the original scheme. I waited for a cab to cross the bottom of the frame — without it the picture is architecture, and with it, it is New York.

Part of Night Cities, a series.
