Dawn photograph of the Marlborough Sounds, a small boat crossing calm golden water and leaving a long V-shaped wake, steep bush-covered headlands stacked into mist on both sides.

Wake

Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand · August 2020

One boat, and suddenly the water has a direction.

Dawn in the Sounds, drowned river valleys where the sea runs miles inland between steep bush headlands. The water was completely flat until this boat crossed the frame and put a long wake across it — which is the whole picture, because without a line in it the surface is just a flat gold field. Shot long to stack the headlands into each other.
