Black and white photograph of the Marlborough Sounds under heavy cloud, dark low islands lying across still pale water with a band of mist caught between the headlands.

Low Cloud, Sounds

Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand · August 2020

1D X Mark II, 70 millimetres, f 4, 1/4000 of a second, ISO 400

Same water, an hour later, and all the colour gone out of it.

An hour after the boat, with the cloud right down and every bit of warmth gone. Black and white, because what was left was a set of grey tones stacked horizontally — water, islands, mist, cloud — and colour was contributing nothing. The band of mist trapped between the headlands is the only thing in the frame that is not a hard edge.
