The jagged, snow-dusted ridge of the Remarkables across Lake Wakatipu under a sky of streaked pink and violet cloud, the lakefront trees and lights of Queenstown along the far shore, layered rock slabs in the foreground and willow branches hanging in from the top of the frame.

The Remarkables, in Pink

Queenstown, New Zealand · August 2020

The lake was flatter than the sky.

A long exposure from the lakeshore, with the willow hanging into the top of the frame and the slabs of schist in the foreground to stand on. The Remarkables are the reason for the photograph: that ridge is one of the few anywhere that looks like a drawing of a mountain range. The cloud streaked, the lake went to silk, and the town lights along the far shore stayed put.

Part of The Southern Alps, a series.
