Night photograph of the Hungarian Parliament Building floodlit gold along the Danube, its spires and central dome reflected in a long gold column on the dark water.

Parliament

Budapest, Hungary · December 2017

1D X Mark II, 50 millimetres, f 22, 4 seconds, ISO 400

The third largest parliament building in the world, and it is all frontage.

Shot from the Buda side across the Danube, where the whole building presents itself flat-on and drops a column of gold straight down the water. It is neo-Gothic, enormous, and was finished in 1902 for a country that then spent most of the following century unable to use it as intended. Long exposure to smooth the river, exposed for the floodlighting so the sky stays properly dark.

Part of Night Cities, a series.
