The stepped Art Deco Paramount Building in Times Square lit red and gold at night, its clock tower against a black sky, the NYPD sign at street level, wet pavement reflecting the neon and a few pedestrians and a police officer in a hi-vis vest crossing the plaza.

The Paramount, in Red

Times Square, New York · February 2021

1D X Mark II, 16 millimetres, f 2.8, 1/250 of a second, ISO 1000

Red, gold, and wet underfoot.

The Paramount is one of the few buildings in Times Square that looks better than its billboards, so I gave it the whole left side of the frame and let the screens crowd in from the right. Wet pavement doubles the light. Winter, a snowbank or two along the kerb, and not many people out, which for Times Square counts as empty.

Part of Night Cities, a series.
