A wide night-time street in Lower Manhattan shot from road level: a red traffic light hanging over a striped pedestrian crossing, security bollards along the kerb, bare winter trees, office towers lit window by window and a car's headlights approaching from the far end.

Red Light, Empty Street

New York · February 2020

1D X Mark II, 16 millimetres, f 2.8, 1/30 of a second, ISO 3200

Nobody coming, for a whole exposure.

Camera almost on the tarmac in the middle of the crossing, in a gap in the traffic long enough for the exposure. The red light is what the frame is about, a whole street held still by one lamp, and the bollards and the bare trees are the winter of it. A few people down at the far end, small enough to pass for street furniture.

Part of Night Cities, a series.
